Having kids are always a blessing to the family. Kids are like butterflies and flowers in a spring garden. They add meaning to the life of their parents. In contrary, often their mischievousness can irritate the parents too.

Nevertheless, proper parenting is an essential factor in the formation of good personality and character of kids. So, the present-day challenges in the parenting worth a discussion to understand the different aspects.

Dr. Jayesh Saini Nairobi, Kenya who is a well-known child psychologist in Dubai, discusses the major challenges involved in the present-day parenting. According to him, the present world has it’s on good and adverse effects on the parenting. The major factors and are as follows;

1. Busy Parents

If both parents are working, the time which they get to spend with their kids would be very minimal. As a result, the kids would be taken care either by some kids care centers or Nannies (especially for the toddlers). And the bonding between the parents and kids also will be poor which can adversely affect the kids. Bonding between the kids and parents often comes from the interactions; touches, smells, tastes, kisses.. Imagine the kids are lacking these due to the unavailability of their parents. Poor kids will get away with the available things which may or may not be useful for them.

Another affected parties are the single parents, especially single mothers. Most of the kids of single parents are not getting much attention from their parent. Besides, the low income for the single parents badly affects the kids in getting good facilities.

2. Social Media Influences

Due to the present scenario in the education sector which promote online classes over physical classes, kids are extensively exposed to the web world. So, the ill effects are unimaginable. Dr. Jayesh Saini Nairobi, Kenya says “recently, one parent of a 6-year-old kid came for a consultation. His kid has started watching too many links in the web and has now learned how to clear off the history too. As the parent was not able to see the history, he became paranoid about the content which their kids might have seen. It’s a serious concern as the kids are no longer hesitant to learn the new ideas and technologies of web and the parents are often not aware of this.”

Besides, some kids have now started to watch the adultery contents even before reaching the adolescent age. Dr. Jayesh Saini Nairobi, Kenya’s wife who is a Grade 9–12 teacher describes an incident related to this. One day, she was in the school bus along with the students going to the school. Accidently, she came to know noticing the conversation between two Grade 2 students. To her shock, they were discussing a women body description along with the picture of a naked women. She soon caught them and has given a private counselling to the kids. But she was wondering from where they got these forbidden “knowledges”. And, she believes this is nothing but the ill effects of online exposure.

3. Honest Wrong Believes

For some of the parents, their kids are the most innocent and straight forward kids in the world. They believe that their kids will not make any mistakes and will not spend time to monitor what they are doing. This may not be correct always. Dr. Jayesh Saini Nairobi, Kenya describes one of his experience with a parent. A 10-year-old kid was a brilliant academic performer and a favorite for all his teachers. One day, a nearby grocery owner has complained that this kid is regularly stealing goods from his shop. Naturally, this parent was too much furious over this shop guy saying that it is a false accusation with the belief that his son will not do any such fault. However, the shop owner has proven this later with some CCTV footages. The parent has become shocked and visited Dr. Jayesh Saini Nairobi, Kenya to seek some advice.

4. Increased Screen time/ Virtual World exposure

Before some time, a teacher has made a survey for their kinder Garten students. The question was “from where you get milk”. The response was a real thought-provoking moment for all. Around 80% of the students responded wrongly. Supermarket, bottle, refrigerator, Nannie were among the wrong answers. So, the city-living kids are least exposed to the real world and hence, not able to grasp the real-world systems. Obesity, lack of proper nutrition are the side effects of this problem.

5. Single kids

The main advantage of generation born before 80s were a good number of siblings. It had created a good environment and a co-living system which promoted sharing among the fellows. It has also had the advantage of having a good time for the parents as the kids were always busy with their siblings. Although arranging resources were a draw back of more kids, it had created some culture of sharing and unity.

6. Nuclear Families

Nuclear Families reduced the interaction between kids and grandparents. For most of the kids, their grandparents are strangers who are alienated from their life. Grandparents can contribute high in the parenting as they are already experienced in the parenting and will have high temperament compared with the young parents. Dr. Saini says- some schools in Dubai now celebrates a week with Grandparents which include inviting grandparents to the school, having story time with the grandparents, preparing family trees etc.

No parents would like to have their kids out of the track or socially unacceptable or becoming a threat to the society. Hence, proper parenting shall be given with high priority. Each kid is unique. His/ her aspirations, aptitudes, nature and every characteristic will be unique. Parents can understand their kid’s qualities more than anyone. So, they have the duty to guide their kids to a proper path provided they give the kids their enough space.
